Introduction

From the beginning, the Carmelites assisted groups of lay people who disired to live a better Christian life through their devotion to Our Lady, their prayer, their charity. In time, the groups which were better organized gathered together into a well-structured institution with specific obligations: this became known as the Carmelite Third Order, true school of holiness and of ecclesial commitment, with a Rule of its own.

The Confraternity of Carmel is a more popular association of wider appeal for people who are devoted to Our Lady and who wear the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and who commit themselves, in particular, in liturgy and in service, of the Christian life.

Today the presence of Carmelite spirituality among committed lay people is developing new forms: Secular Institutes, Youth Organizations, Missionary Groups, Evangelical Fraternities, Prayer Movements, Circles of Spirituality.

One of the most important manifestations of this lay participation in the life of Carmel is the wearing of the Scapular of Carmel and honouring Our Lady, especially under the title of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The picture of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is venerated in every Carmelite monastery and convent and in a large number of churches. Some sanctuaries are also very famous and very popular.

Third Order

Photo: International Lay Carmelite Congress 2012

The Third Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel is an association of lay people who, in response to a call from God promise to live the Gospel in the spirit of the Carmelite Order and under its guidance.

As well as lay people, diocesan priests, who find in the Carmelite charism help for their spiritual lives and their mission in the Church and the world, may be members of the Carmelite Third Order.

The Third Order member is connected to the Carmelite Order by means of the promise which he or she makes. It is possible, following a very ancient custom, to make private vows of chastity and obedience according to one's state in life in order to be consecrated more closely to God.

Lay Carmelites, filled with the spirit of the Order, seek to live their own vocation by silently listening to the Word of God (Lectio Divina). According to the constant tradition of Carmel, they will especially cultivate prayer in all its forms.

The members of the Third Order take their inspiration from the figures of Our Lady and the Prophet Elijah.

In the midst of their normal family lives, in the work place, in their social commitments and relationships with other people, Carmelite Third Order members seek out the hidden image of God. They try to live in the spirit of the Beatitudes, humbly and consistently exercising the virtues of honesty, justice, sincerity, courtesy and fortitude, without which no Christian or human life is possible.

The Carmelite Third Order is divided into communities, fraternities or sodalities which are accompanied by the superiors of the Carmelite Order or their delegates. These groups are instituted by the Prior General of the Carmelite Order according to the law of the Church with the previous approval of the local Bishop.

Those who wish to be members of the Carmelite Third Order must be practicing Catholics. They must not be members of any other Third Order or Secular Institute, except in special cases, and they must be at least 18 years of age. After a period of initial formation, candidates are accepted for profession.

There are very many enthusiastic members of the Carmelite Third Order throughout the world at present. In recent years many new communities of lay Carmelites have been set up in various parts of the world. There has been a marvelous growth in the Third Order especially in the USA, Italy, Puerto Rico, Trinidad, Kenya, The Philippines, Indonesia and Timor Leste.

New groups like "Carmelo Domestico" and "La Famiglia of Castellina (Florence)" in Italy, "Carmel Movement" in the Netherlands and the International Missionary Family "Donum Dei". These groups have found in the Carmelite Third Order and its Rule of life a great help to live their own vocation in the Church and the world.

Over the centuries, the Carmelite Third Order has given many models of holiness to the Church. At present there are a number of Third Order members whose causes for beatification are being considered. Among these there are, Liberata Ferrarons (a young Spanish woman who worked in a textile factory), Anita Zelickova (a young Czech woman who offered her life to God in reparation for the sin of abortion) and Carmen de Sojo i Anguera (mother of a large family).

Fr. Kilian Lynch, who was the Prior General of the Carmelite Order from 1947 to 1959, talking to lay Carmelites, said, "The Third Order is an extension of the Order among those who believe. They are members of the Carmelite Order living in the world. In the modern world, the Third Order has greater significance than in past centuries. It is a firm anchor for those working for the transformation of the world."

Confraternities

The Scapular Confraternity of Carmel is an association of the faithful who strive for the perfection of charity in the world in the spirit of the Carmelite Order. Through their free commitment, they participate in the life of the Order and its spiritual benefits in an intimate communion of thought, ideals and works, together with Mary.

Setting up: The competent authority for the canonical erection of a Confraternity is the Superior General of the Carmelite Order. For churches belonging to the Order, the consent given by the bishop for the setting up of the religious house is also valid for the setting up of the Confraternity. However, for the erection of the Confraternity in other churches or places, the written consent of the bishop is required.

Reception into the Confraternity of the Scapular of Carmel is the prerogative of an authorised person who acts in the name of the Order. The reception takes place according to the proper rite approved by the Holy See, by means of enrolment in the Scapular. The Scapular consists of two brown or dark pieces of material, joined together by two ribbons. For receptions, the name of the faithful and the date must be registered in a book kept for the purpose. On this occasion, a certificate with the name of the Confraternity or of the Church to which the person enrolled belongs may be given. These conditions, however, may be waived.

After the reception of the Scapular, the faithful may, for personal reasons, substitute it with a medal showing on one side the Sacred Heart of Jesus and on the other Our Lady. Both Scapular and medal may be replaced without having to be blessed again. The members of the Confraternity must at all times devoutly wear the Scapular (or the medal), as a visible sign of their belonging to Mary in the brotherhood of Carmel. But above all the members are bound to set aside regularly time to be with God in prayer, frequent participation in the Eucharist, daily recitation of one of the Hours of the Liturgy or of some Psalms or the rosary or other equivalent prayers. New members may gain plenary indulgences on the day they join the Confraternity and on the following feasts: Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel (16 July), St. Elias, prophet (20 July), St. Simon Stock (16 May), St. Therese of the Child Jesus (1 October), St. Teresa of Jesus (15 October), all the Carmelite Saints (14 November), and St. John of the Cross (14 December), provided they fulfil the usual conditions: going to confession and communion, saying a prayer for the intentions of the Pope and renewing the promise to observe the commitments to the Confraternity.

The solemn feast of the Confraternity is that of the Commemoration of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel (16 July). Members will celebrate this feast with great devotion and gratitude towards Mary, renewing their commitment of service to her, fidelity to Jesus Christ and the Church, and commending the whole Carmelite Family to the maternal heart of the Virgin.

If possible, the members will meet periodically to build up the sense of fraternity, to study Carmelite spirituality, to care for brothers and sisters in need, all in union with Mary.

Devotees

The following of Christ and of Mary, as understood and lived according to the charism of the Order, is the ideal of the faithful in the Carmelite Family. They can rely on the help and support of all the brothers and sisters who share in the same ideal. The members of the Carmelite Family live their commitment in various ways: in solitude, in community, in the apostolic life, on the streets of the world, working with Mary for the Kingdom of Christ.
The different groups set up and recognised by the Order, help to emphasise the communal character of the Carmelite Family. Those who, led by the Spirit, want to dedicate their whole life in this world - in union with Mary - to the glory of God form part of these groups. Thus, becoming part of the fraternity of the Order of the Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel and receiving the Scapular as a sign of such membership, has certain consequences:
* To live as "brothers" or "sisters" of Mary in communion with the whole Carmelite Family, to enter more deeply into its spirit, to live its ideals and its tradition, praying and co-operating with it in order that, faithful to its charism and their vocation, they may reflect, in the world, Mary who brings Jesus to the world.
* To give to Mary space in their life and to seek to live fidelity to Christ following the example of Mary:
- in faith which looks to God and enters into dialogue with the Mystery;
- in hope which transforms itself into being at the service of God;
- in charity which abandons itself to the will of the Lord in order to serve others especially those who are considered the least.
* To imitate the "praying Virgin" who "kept the word of God in her heart" (cf Lk 2,19.51), setting aside some time to meet God in prayer, meditating on the mysteries of salvation, taking part with faith in the liturgy of the Church, especially the Eucharist, reciting every day some liturgical Hour or some Psalms or the holy Rosary. To live in the presence of the living God, making every aspect of life a prayer, at the same time remembering the obligations of their state in life.
* To share in the Pascal mystery of Christ by means of voluntary penance, lived in the spirit of Carmel, looking to Mary, whose soul was pierced by a sword (cf Lk 2,35), who "sustained her union with her Son faithfully even to the cross, where she stood (cf Jn 19,25) suffering deeply with her First born and uniting herself with her motherly heart to his sacrifice" (Lumen Gentium).
* To show the love of God. The "Most Pure Virgin" allowed the love of God to shine through all her being without any resistance. This is a love which opens her to the whole of humanity. Thus, she attracts those who keep their heart and senses, their body and soul, open to the love of God, whom they seek and desire in all things and above all things. The faithful open themselves to receive the gift of holiness from God through human relationships and in the love of neighbour. This love sees the human body as the "dwelling place" of God (cf 1 Cor 3,16; 16,17), and as the vehicle of love and communication.
* To engage in the works of Evangelisation. Those who wear the Scapular identify themselves with the mission of Carmel to be a prophetic sign of union with God in the world, to work for the coming of the Kingdom of God through sharing, reconciliation, justice, looking after the sick, listening to the cries of the poor.
* As much as possible, to foster fraternal communion among the members of the fraternity by means of assemblies and meetings which nourish and support these aims.
The Scapular is the sign of the love of Mary, icon of the goodness and mercy of the Most Blessed Trinity. This commitment is in answer to the love of God, and is a fruit of the spiritual riches which God pours into the hearts of the faithful.
