General Chapter of the Handmaids of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Zimbabwe
 
The Congregation of the Handmaids of Our Lady of Mount Carmel celebrated their General Chapter in August 2007 in Zimbabwe. The sisters were assisted in their deliberations by a number of individuals, including the Papal Nuncio, Bishop Edward Adams.
Elected to serve in the Congregation's leadership were:
Mother General: Sr. Evelyn Kadzere
Vicar: Sr. Irene Dumbura
Councilors: Sr. Catherine Nyakujipa
Councilors: Sr. Thecla Nyamushonyongora
Councilors: Sr. Christine Ipai Undi
The Congregation was founded in 1959 by the late Bishop Donal Lamont, O. Carm., with headquarters in Mutare, Zimbabwe. The Congregation has 18 houses with almost 100 sisters.

This issue celebrates two of the major anniversaries celebrated this year: the 400th anniversary of the death of St. Mary Magdalene de’ Pazzi and the 800th anniversary of the Formula Vitae of St. Albert of Jerusalem. This issue also contains news from around the world.
Some of CITOC's reoccuring features, such as the Carmelite Culture, Life in Carmel, Elective Chapters, Carmelite History, the Carmelite NGO, Res Carmelitana, and the obituaries are also available. This issue also contains the Isidore Bakanja Bulletin with reports on the activities of the Lay Carmelites around the globe.

Closure of the 7th Centenary of the Death of St. Albert of Trapani (1307-2007)
 
On August 7, 2007, the feast of St. Albert of Sicily, the VII Centenary of the death of St. Albert of Trapani (1307 - 2007) was officially closed with a huge celebration over three days. On August 6, the Prior General, Joseph Chalmers, celebrated a solemn Mass in the Sanctuary of the Annunciation of the Carmelites in Trapani (Sicily). He was joined by Carmelite religious and priests.
When the Mass was finished, a momument to St. Albert was inaugurated in one of the streets in the city center in the presence of the Bishop of the Diocese of Trapani, Francesco Miccichè and the Mayor of Trapani, Girolamo Fazio. In the afternoon, the Prior General presided at the commemoration of the death of St. Albert and afterwards the reliques of the saint were transferred to the Cathedral. During the procession a neighborhood was dedicated as the Barrio de San Alberto by the Mayor on the occasion of the VII Centenary.
On August 8, the Bishop celebrated a solemn pontifical Mass in the Cathedral. Concelebrants were the Prior General and the Prior Provincial of the Italian Province, along with almost the entire clergy of the diocese, the Carmelite religious, the Discalced Carmelites, and various religious from the area. Between the Mass and the procession back to the Sanctuary of the Annunciation, the Prior General, assisted by the Mayor, inaugurated a commemorative plaque at the entrance of the cell where the Saint lived (today it is a chapel), in remembrance of this VII Centenary and of the closure of the Jubilee Year of St. Albert.

Carmen Maya Linares, O. Carm (ARA)
 
Sr. Carmen Maya Linares, O. Carm (Aracena, Spain), O. Carm., member of the Carmelite community of Santa Catalina in Aracena (Huelva), Spain, died on July 28, 2007.
She was born on February 24, 1920, in Bodonal de la Sierra (Badajoz), Spain and made her simple profession in Carmel on October 15, 1949.
She lived the Carmelite spirituality each day with deep faith in the well of God.

William Heery, O. Carm. (PCM)
 
Fr. William Heery, O. Carm., a member of the PCM Province, died on August 13, 2007. He was 91 years old.
Fr. William was born on March 3, 1916 in Chicago, Illinois (USA). He made his simple profession on August 15, 1936 and was ordained a priest on May 23, 1942.

Beatification of the Carmelite Martyrs of Catalonia, Àngel Maria Prat Hostench and his 16 Companions
 
The Vatican has announced that the beatification of Carmelite Servant of God Àngel Maria Prat Hostench and his 16 Companions will take place at St. Paul Outside the Walls, Rome, on October 28, 2007.
These Carmelites fell victim to the hatred of the Christian faith during the religious persecution during the Spanish Civil War in the years 1936-39. Some 498 Spanish martyrs will be beatified during the ceremony.

Fr. Louis Rogge, O. Carm., a member of the PCM Province, died on August 8, 2007. He was 77 years old. Fr. Rogge was born on February 12, 1930 in Louisville, Kentucky. He made his simple profession on August 22, 1949 and was ordained a priest on July 4, 1954.

Beatification of Madre Candelaria
 
The beatification of Madre Candelaria will take place in Caracas, Venezuela on February 2, 2008.
The Servant of God Candelaria of San Jose is the foundress of the Congregation of the Hermanas Carmelitas de Madre Candelaria. The Congregation began in 1903 and was affiliated to the Carmelite Order on March 25, 1925. According to the Status Ordinis (2005), the Congregation has 14 houses in Venezuela and Bolivia and 64 professed sisters. The General Curia is in La Campiña, Caracas.

Manuel Anguiano Villegas, O. Carm. (Curia/Baetica)
 
Fr. Manuel Anguiano, a member of the Baetica Province and currently a member of the community of the General Curia in Rome, died on July 17, 2007. He was 74 years old.
Fr. Manuel was born on November 6, 1933, in Seville, Spain. He made his simple profession on June 17, 1951 and was ordained priest on March 14, 1959.

Canonical Erection of the Province of St. Thomas of the Syro-Malabar Rite in India

 

 
The Prior General, Joseph Chalmers, with the consent of his Council, erected the Province of St. Thomas of the Syro-Malabar Rite. The Province of St. Thomas of the Syro-Malabar Rite will come into existence on July 16. The decree of the canonical erection of the province will be published on July 3, the Feast of St. Thomas the Apostle.
This year is also the 25th year of the presence of the Order in India.
The new Province of St Thomas will have 58 solemnly professed members, 23 simply professed and 8 novices in the current year.
This brings the number of Province of the Order to 20. There are three General Commissariats and three General Delegations as well as 75 monasteries of enclosed nuns and five groups of hermits in the Order. Fifteen Congregations and Institutes are affiliated with the Order.

Josefina Rodríquez Covo, O. Carm. (CAU)
 
Sr. Josefina Rodríguez Covo, 81 years old, died on June 19, 2007. She was a member of the Carmelite community in the enclosed monastery of Corazón de Jesús in Caudete (Albacete), Spain.
Sister was born in Arganda del Rey (Madrid) on July 3, 1925. She made her simple profession on April 10, 1950.
