The Carmelite Order is delighted to announce today, 8th December 2010, that the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI has nominated bishop of the Territorial Prelature of Itaituba, in Brazil, Fr. Wilmar Santin O.Carm., of the Commissariat of Paraná of the Upper German Province. Fr. Wilmar was born at Paranavaí in Brazil, on 21st October 1952. Following his profession in the Order on 2nd January 1973, he was ordained priest on 8th December 1979. Among his many responsibilities in the Order, from 1990 to 1995 he served as Commissary Provincial, from 1995 to 2001 as General Councillor and from 2005 to 2008 as Prior of the Centro Internazionale S. Alberto (CISA) in Rome. During these past few years he has worked in Parish in Manaus and has taught Church History at the "Instituto de Teologia, Pastoral e Ensino Superior da Amazônia".

Archbishop Antônio Muniz Fernandes, O.Carm.

Pope Benedict XVI has named Bishop Antônio Muniz Fernandes, O. Carm., currently Bishop of Guarabira, as the new Archbishop of Maceió in Brazil. This followed the pope’s acceptance of the resignation of Archbishop José Carlos Melo, C.M., because of age.Bishop Antônio Muniz Fernandes, O. Carm., was born in Princesa Isabel, Paraíba in Brazil on August 11, 1952. He completed elementary and secondary studies at the Carmelite minor seminary Nossa Senhora do Carmo in Camocim de São Felix.
He made his profession of Simple Vows on February 20, 1976 and was ordained a priest on May 24, 1980. In the years 1983-1986 he was a student at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome where he earned a Licentiate in Biblical Theology. He completed some studies in Jerusalem.He was nominated bishop on February 14, 1998 and was consecrated on the following May 24. That same day he took possession of the Diocese of Guarabira. As bishop, he has served in the following positions: Vice President of the Northeastern II Region of the CNBB (2003-2005), President of the Northeastern II Region of the CNBB (from 2005), Responsible for Prison Ministry.

Vicegerent of the Diocese of Rome, Italy
The Holy Father, Benedict XVI, on Jannuary 31st, 2012 has nominated to one of the most senior positions in the Diocese of Rome, Italy, His Excellency Bishop Filippo Iannone, O.Carm. (Brun), who up until now has been Bishop of the Diocese of Sora-Aquino-Pontecorvo. He has been bishop there since the 19th June 2009. Together with this new office, the Pope has conferred on him the title of Archbishop.
Rome is the Pope’s Diocese to which he nominates the Cardinal Vicar and the “Vicegerente”. Together with the assistant bishops they are responsible for the normal pastoral running of the Diocese.
His Excellency Bishop Filippo Iannone, O.Carm., was born in Naples on December 13, 1957. He entered the Carmelite Order on August 1st 1976 right after high school. He entered the novitiate at the community of San Martino ai Monti in Rome and made his first vows on October 1, 1977. He professed his solemn vows on October 15, 1980 at community of Carmine Maggiore in Naples and was ordained priest on June 26, 1982 in Naples, Italy.
Bishop Filippo Iannone, O.Carm has a Bachelor degree of Theology at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Southern Italy and Ph.D in Canon Law at the Pontifical Lateran University. He earned a graduate diploma in law at the Institute of Tribunale della Sacra Romana Rota. He also attended some specialization courses at some departments of the Holy See.
In the Order of Carmel he has held various positions; as commissariat procurator from 1985 to 1988, bursar from 1988 to 1991, commissariat councilor from 1988 to 1994 and Chairman of the Commission for the revision of the Constitutions from 1989 to 1995.
In the Archdiocese of Naples he has held the following offices: Tribunal of the Diocese of Naples from 1990 to 1994, Episcopal Vicar for the pastoral zone IV from 1994 to 1996 and Vicar General from 1996 to 2001. He was also a professor of Canon Law at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Southern Italy, some Institutes of Religious and Federico II University of Naples.
He was elected titular bishop of Nebbi and appointed auxiliary of Naples on April 12th, 2001. On May 26 of the same year he was ordained a bishop. On June 19, 2009 he was appointed bishop of Sora-Aquino-Pontecorvo.
Currently, he is a member of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, a consultant for the Congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life. He is member of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Chairman of the Committee of liturgy of Italian Episcopal Conference.

Bishop António Vitalino Fernandes Dantas, O. Carm.
Bishop Antonio Vitalino was born on 3 November 1941 in Terras de Bastos (Oleiros, Parada de Gantim), in the township of Vila Verde, archdiocese of Braga.In 1957 he entered the Order of Carmel and was received in the Missionary Seminary of Falperra (Braga).He made his noviciate in Casa da Mata in Longra-Douro, Falgueiras (in the diocese of Porto), in 1960-1961.
He studied philosophy and theology at the Institute Sedes Sapientiae of the Dominican Fathers, in Fatima, from 1961 to 1966.He was then sent to the Carmelite College in Mainz, Germany, and to the University of Fribourg in Brisgovia, where he took a course on Religious life and on spiritual theology.He was in Germany for ten years.His specialisation is in Spiritual Theology and Religious Life.
On 8 September 1965 he made his solemn profession in the Order of Carmel and on 3 August 1968 was ordained priest in the Sanctuary of Sameiro, Braga.For several years he was chaplain to Portuguese emigrants in Germany.In his Commissariat General he was director of the magazine Carmelo Lusitano, and was first assistant parish priest and then parish priest of the parish of Santo Antonio dos Cavaleiros in Lisbon.He was also Rector of the Casa de Formação Beato Nuno in Fatima, and was elected Commissary General twice.
Bishob Antonio Vitalino Fernandes Dantas, O.Carm., was consecrated Auxiliary Bishop to the Patriarch of Lisbon (Portugal) and titular bishop of Tlos on 29 September 1996 in the Lisbon Cathedral.
On January 25, 1999, he was appointed by Pope John Paul II, Bishop of Beja.

Bishop Lucio Angelo Renna, O.Carm.
Bishop Lucio Angelo M. Renna was born on September 22, 1941 in San Pietro Vernotico, Italy. After finishing the studies in high school, he entered the minor seminary and then the major seminary of the Carmelite Order. On December 8, 1962 he made his solemn profession and he was ordained priest in Bari on April 2, 1966.
He obtained doctorates in theology (Pontifical Lateran University) and Philosophy (University of Lecce), he has published several articles on philosophy and theology.
He was prior of Torre Santa Susanna Community (1969-1975), prior provincial of the Province of Naples from 1975 to 1984 and from 1987 to 1995, and General Procurator of the Order from 1995 to 1998.
On June 9, 1999 he was elected Bishop of Marsi by Pope John Paul II, and ordained bishop on September 12, 1999 by Cardinal Lucas Moreira Neves.
On September 2, 2006, Bishop Lucio Angelo M. Renna, O. Carm., was appointed bishop of the new Diocese of San Severo, Italy.
The solemn Eucharist took place at the Palasport Comunale in San Severo in the presence of the Apostolic Nuncio for Italy, Bishop Paolo Romeo, as well as the former Bishop, Michele Seccia and the Bishop of Isernia, Andrea Gemma.
Present were a large number of priests from the Diocese of San Severo as well as Avezzano, Bishop Renna’s former diocese, members of the Carmelite Curia in Rome and of the Carmelite Neapolitan Province, religious women, civil authorities, and a large crowd of faithful.
In his homily, Bishop Renna said, "At the beginning of my pastoral ministry in this local Church, I have no desire for power, but only the desire to serve. To govern does not mean a separation but a communion with the people. I ask the help of all so that I gain a more profound understanding of the social-ecclesial reality of this diocese."

Archbishop José Cardoso Sobrinho, O.Carm.
Bishop José was born on June 30, 1933 in Caruaru, Brazil. After finishing his minor seminary and major seminary of the Order of Carmelites, Fluminense Province he was sent to Rome for theology and doctorate and where he was ordained a priest on April 28, 1957.
He has a PhD in canon law at Gregorian University, and a PhD in civil law at the Lateran University in Rome.
He was a professor of Canon Law in Rome at the International College of St. Albert the Carmelite Order (1960-1968), General Councilor of the Order (1971-1977), General Procurator of the Order (1971-1979).
On April 28, 1979, he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Paracatu, Minas Gerais, by Pope John Paul II and on April 10, 1985 he was appointed archbishop of the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife.
Between 1987 and 1991 was President of the Northeast Region of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil.
After completing 75 years of age on 30 June 2008, Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation as archbishop according to law.
