First Meeting of Carmelite Confraternities in Murcia (Spain)

On March 15, the first meeting of Carmelite Confraternities in the Murcia region of Spain was celebrated in the town of Beniaján. There were about 300 participants from the confraternity of Beniaján itself which played host to the encounter, from the city of Murcia, Mula and San Pedro del Piantar, all with their various directors and presidents. The participants shared their experiences and activities in a fraternal climate. The aim of the meeting was to create closer ties of friendship and to take a first step towards future meetings and cooperation among the laity of the region, centering on devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
A film on popular Carmelite religion in the confraternities of Murcia was shown and a votive Mass was celebrated in the Shrine Chapel of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Pastoral messages were read from the Prior General, Fr. Fernando Millán Romeral, and from the Prior Provincial of Arago-Valentina, Fr. Carmelo Gómez. The success of this first meeting has opened the way to other encounters in the future, which will be organized on an annual basis by one of the confraternities.

Meeting of Carmelite Nuns in the Antilles

From 13 to 19 April in the monastery of Santa Teresa of Jesus in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, a meeting of Carmelite nuns in the Antilles was held. The 43 nuns were greeted by the prioress, Mother Maria José Bernal. The Delegate for the Nuns, Fr. Rogelio Mur (Arag.) also took part.
Fr. Desiderio García (Arag.) spoke about the various topics contained in the Ratio Institutionis Vitae Carmelitanae Monialium. Contemplation is central and prayer its doorway, this document speaks of the lifestyle proper to nuns which is different from that of the friars: cloister and heavenly marriage. These are themes which run through the entire document and which offer a path to the transformation of the heart, a way which brings union with God, through Jesus Christ.
The nuns who took part, besides sharing their own experiences, evaluated the experience of community life in the light of the teaching of the Ratio Institutionis Vitae Carmelitanae Monialium and all that the document asks of them.

Portuguese Bishops publish a pastoral communication on Blessed Nuño

To mark the announcement of the canonization of Blessed Nuño which will take place on 26 April, the Conference of Portuguese Bishops published on 6 March a pastoral communication entitled  An heroic example in a time of crisis.
In their message the Portuguese bishops express their joy and gratitude for the canonization of the ‘son of our land’.
The communication emphasizes that Blessed Nuño is not only a national hero, but above all a model for holiness. He followed Jesus in a radical way taking up “the spiritual arms of which the letter to the Ephesians (cf Eph 6, 10-20) and the Carmelite Rule both speak: the breastplate of justice, the sword of the Spirit (the Word of God), the shield of faith, prayer, the spirit of service in order to announce the Gospel of peace, perseverance in practicing good.”
The bishops indicate in their document the heroic qualities of the new saint while taking account also of the present world crisis. His example can “help us to respond to the challenges of the present time.” They continue “in this context the witness of the life of Blessed Nuño will constitute a force for change in favour of justice and fraternity which will promote a life style which is more sober and displays solidarity and initiatives for the sharing of goods.”
“The Portuguese bishops, therefore, propose the example of Blessed Nuño Álvares Pereira to the men and women of today which is points to gospel values, to the greater good of all, willing to fight for interests above those of individual nations, keen to serve the defenseless and the poor. In this way we will all become an active part in the construction of a more just and fraternal society which we all desire.”

General Finance Commission, 3 – 5 March 2009

A meeting of the General Finance Commission of the Order was held in Rome from 3 to 5 March under the chairmanship of Kevin Alban (Brit.), the Bursar-General. The first day was devoted to a meeting with the Domus Board of Management to exchange ideas about the performance of the Domus in the short term economic crisis and to share views on the long term place of the Domus in the overall scheme of the Order’s finances. On 4 March the Commission reviewed the accounts for the Curia and its works for 2008, which showed a modest surplus in line with the approved budget. The Commission also revisited the budget for 2009 and urged the Bursar General to ensure that it was adhered to as faithfully as possible. Finally, the Commission considered the Triennial Bursars’ Meeting due to be held in October 2009 and whether in the present climate it should be postponed. The Commission decided to go ahead with the meeting, but with a reduced number of participants, in order to alleviate the financial burden on provinces sending delegates.
