Meeting of the General Formation Commission

On 12-16 November 2018, the members of the General Formation Commission gathered in the Curia Generalizia, Rome for their annual meeting. It was attended by Fr. Benny Phang Khong Wing, O.Carm. (General Councilor for Formation); Fr. Roberto Noel Rosas, O.Carm. (Administrative Secretary for Formation); Fr. Onesmus Muthoka, O.Carm. (Ken); Fr. Krispinus Ginting, O.Carm. (Indo); Fr. Wayne Stanhope, O.Carm. (Aust); Fr. Quinn Conners, O.Carm. (PCM);

and Fr. Giampiero Molinari, O.Carm. (Segretario Generale), and Fr. Desiderio García, O.Carm. (ACV). Due to some health problems Fr. Jose Alex Valavanattu, O.Carm. (Ind) and Fr. Albeiro Luis Romero, O.Carm. (Ita-Col) were not able to attend the meeting.

Among the matters discussed were: updates from the geographic areas on Formation; report on the evaluation of the International Carmelite Students’ Course in the Netherlands and Germany on Titus Brandsma and discussion of its evaluation, comments and recommendations with a view to future international courses; evaluation of the General Formation Commission’s six-year program regarding its involvement and collaboration on matters of formation in the Order; the General Formation Commission’s objectives of the six years, methodology and conduct of the International courses; the office of the Secretary for Formation; and discussion on recommendations for the General Chapter.

Fr. Benny Phang Khong Wing, O.Carm. and Fr. Roberto Noel Rosas, O.Carm. expressed their deep gratitude and appreciation for the members participation and collaboration on the Commission which enabled the publication of a Companion to the Ratio Institutionis Vitae Carmelitanae and organizing three International Formation Courses which were very well received: the on-going International Formation Course in Salamanca, Spain in 2014, International Course for Formators and Vocation Promoters in Batu, Indonesia in 2016, and International Course for Carmelite Simply Professed on Titus Brandsma in the Netherlands and Germany in 2018. Also in the six years Fr. Benny Phang Khong Wing, O.Carm. and Fr. Roberto Noel Rosas, O.Carm. attended some meetings of the geographic areas of the Order. The members of the Commission, for their part, thanked everyone for the collaboration, for the fraternity, and for the friendship built up during the course of the work. This was the final meeting of the General Formation Commission.

These three fundamental elements of the charism are not distinct and unrelated values, but closely interwoven. 

All of these we live under the protection, inspiration and guidance of Mary, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, whom we honor as "our Mother and sister."
