Activities of the Prior General

87/2015-13-11

On the 22nd of October, the Prior General, Fernando Millán Romeral, O.Carm. presided at the launch of the book by Ismael Martinez, O.Carm. on the history of the Carmelites in Granada.

The book-launch took place in the city hall (a former Carmelite house, before the confiscation in 1836). Those in attendance included the prior provincial of the Bética province, Fr. Francisco Daza Valverde, O.Carm., various other Carmelites and members of the public.

Before taking part in the 4th Assembly of ALACAR in San Salvador (CITOC-online 85/2015), the Prior General along with Fr. Raúl Maraví, O.Carm., Councillor General for the Americas gave an interview to “Radio Titus”, a station run by young Carmelites that for the last year has been transmitting via the internet (www.radiotitus.com) with great success. In these days he took part in a number of events organised y the Carmelites of San Salvador and the parish of Our Lady of Lourdes.

On the 6th of November the Prior General was in the city hall in Oss (Netherlands) to take part in the solemn act of naming Blessed Titus Brandsma a citizen of honour of the city of Oss. Even though Blessed Titus was a native of Bolsward in Frisia, he spent many years in Oss, as a student and later as a priest. In this city he was the director of the local newspaper and was responsible for a number of social and cultural programmes. The ceremony was led by the Lady Mayor, Mrs. Wobine Buijs-Glaudemans: Those in attendance included Fr. Jan Brouns, prior provincial of the Dutch province, Fr. Georg Zeegers O.Carm., parish priest of the Carmelite parish dedicated to Blessed Titus, and Fr. Falco Thuis, O.Carm., former prior general of the Order. The event was well covered by the local media.

In this period, the prior general has visited the monasteries of Cordoba, Osuna (Seville), Aracena (Huelva) and Granada, all in Spain, as well as Moncorvo in Portugal and Zenderen in the Netherlands.

As Carmelites We live our life of allegiance to Jesus Christ and to serve Him faithfully with a pure heart and a clear conscience through a commitment to seek the face of the living God (the contemplative dimension of life), through prayer, through fraternity, and through service (diakonia). These three fundamental elements of the charism are not distinct and unrelated values, but closely interwoven.

All of these we live under the protection, inspiration and guidance of Mary, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, whom we honor as "our Mother and sister."
