The XV Ordinary General Chapter of the Hermanas Carmelitas was celebrated on July 9 and the session for the election of Superior General and members of the Council was celebrated on July 25, 2002.

Sr. Encarnación Flórez González, O. Carm., was re-elected Superior General, General Councillors: Sr. Concepción Tejerina del Río, O. Carm., Sr. Casimira Gallego Izquierdo, O. Carm., Sr. Mª Angelita Rodríguez Cuesta, O. Carm., Sr. Angeles Fernández Moreno, O. Carm.

The theme of Charismatic Spirituality (How to inculturate the experience of our origins in new forms) was studied and deepened.

Fr. Roland Murphy of the Most Pure Heart of Mary Province died on July 20, 2002 in a Washington, D.C. hospital of complications following a fall.

A biblical scholar with an international reputation, Roland was a noted teacher, lecturer, and author. He was an editor of the Jerome Biblical Commentary as well as numerous studies of the Bible, with a concentration in Wisdom Literature. Fr. Murphy was one of the authors of our Lectio Divina On-line.

Mr. Edmondo Coccia has been named as the new editor of Carmelus. He will take over at the beginning of the next year from Fr. Richard Copsey. Mr. Coccia is a professional translator of books and recently his translation of the Institutio Primorum Monachorum into Italian has been published by the Vatican Press. He also writes frequently for the Carmelite magazine, Madonna del Carmine.
