In 1926, the International College of Saint Albert suspended its course in philosophy. At the same time, the Irish Province wished to establish an Irish Carmelite College in Rome. Because of these two factors, the Prior General, Fr. Elias Magennis, started the building of Pius XI College (the present General Curia). On 19 March 1930, Cardinal Basilio Pompili, Vicar of Rome, placed and blessed the first stone on a piece of land next to the Basilica of San Martino ai Monti. The building took two years to be completed. From the beginning, Pius XI College, which was originally meant for the use of Carmelite students from the Irish Province, was used instead by the students of the Italian Province (from 1932 to 1948), by the Dominican Fathers (who rented the premises during the years 1948 - 1960) and again by the students of the Italian Province (1960 - 1966). In 1966 the General Curia of the Order moved into the building. Part of this same building is used by the "Missionary Family Donum Dei" who have their formation house there. At present the community of the General Curia is made up of about fifteen religious from various Carmelite Provinces.
