The foundation stone of the International College of Saint Albert (and the Domus Carmelitana) in Rome was laid on July 20, 1899 by His Eminence Vincenzo Vannutelli, the Cardinal protector of the Order. The construction of the first two floors was completed in 1901. It was felt, even during the first ten years, that the college building would have to be extended. And so in 1922 work on the third floor was begun and was completed the following year. The initial purpose of the college was to provide a house of studies for Carmelite students in formation. However, in 1998, because of lack of students and with the Jubilee Year of 2000 in view, the building of St. Albert's International Centre was completely restructured and divided in two independent sections: the "International Centre of St. Albert" for Carmelite students and the "Domus Carmelitana" to welcome pilgrims. The Domus Carmelitana, situated in the central part of the Prati area of Rome, 500 meters from St. Peter's Basilica, close to the most striking places of the capital, excellent connections by every means of transport to railway stations and airports, the hotel has 53 rooms with 106 beds. Each room has a bathroom, central heating, air conditioning, satellite television, telephone and refrigerator-bar. The house also has a charming reception area, a restaurant with the possibility of serving kosher and Islamic dishes, a bar, a terrace with panoramic view, an internal garden, a meeting room with simultaneous translation, a room dedicated to inter-faith dialogue, and the opportunity of celebrating religious functions in the chapel of the adjacent International Center of St. Albert.
