Activities of the Prior General

On the 29th of July, as part of the World Youth Day (citoc 58/2016) the Prior General, Fernando Millán Romeral O.Carm. accompanied by Fr. John Keating, O.Carm. Councillor General for Europe, had a meeting In Krakow with the Archbishop of Leopolis (Ukraine), Mieczysław Mokrzycki,

who graciously thanked him for the return of the Carmelites of the Polish Province to his diocese (from which they were expelled in 1946) bearing in mind in the difficult circumstances of the present moment in that country. Bishop Mieczysław presented the Prior General with a medallion commemorating the restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in the Ukraine. Fr. John Keating had visited the community there the week beforehand.

Before taking part in the episcopal ordination of Frei Francisco de Sales Alencar Batista, O.Carm., (citoc 61/2016) the Prior General visited the “inter-Carmelite” community of  Caririaçu (Ceará, Brasil), founded some years ago through the collaboration of various congregations of Carmelite sisters. Now the community is made up of sisters from the “Irmãs Carmelitas da Divina Providencia” (ICDP), the “Irmãs Missionarias Carmelitas de Jesus” (IMCJ), and the “Filhas de Santa Teresa de Jesus” (a diocesan congregation of the diocese of Crato) and members of the Carmelite Third Order. The Prior General who visited the same community some years ago noted how this pilot experience may open the way towards closer collaboration between the congregations of the apostolic life in our Order.

Following the episcopal ordination of Paul Horan, O.Carm. in Mutare, Zimbabwe (citoc 65/2016) the Prior General took part in the blessing of the ground where, God willing, the new monastery of Carmelite nuns will be situated. Among those present were the retired bishop of Mutare, the new Carmelite bishop, the Prior Provincial of the Irish Province, and many other Carmelites. The new community (who have been living for the last year in Mutare) comes from Machakos in Kenya.

Over the last few months, the Prior General, as well as the places already mentioned,  has visited the monasteries of Tafira Alta (Las Palmas, Canaries, Spain), where he preached the Triduum in preparation for the feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, as well as the monasteries of Biella and Montiglio in Italy.

As Carmelites We live our life of allegiance to Jesus Christ and to serve Him faithfully with a pure heart and a clear conscience through a commitment to seek the face of the living God (the contemplative dimension of life), through prayer, through fraternity, and through service (diakonia). These three fundamental elements of the charism are not distinct and unrelated values, but closely interwoven.

All of these we live under the protection, inspiration and guidance of Mary, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, whom we honor as "our Mother and sister."
