    ACTIVITIES OF THE MEMBERS
    OF THE GENERAL COUNCIL

    Fr. Joseph Chalmers, Prior General

At the end of my last report I mentioned that I was preparing to go to Burkina Faso with Fr. Anthony Scerri. We went there at the end of February 2001 and were very pleased to see how well the new community of the Baetica Province, assisted by the Italian Province, was doing. Many thanks are due to our sisters of the Missionary Family Donum Dei who helped greatly in making the dream of a foundation of friars there a reality.

According to the Constitutions, the Prior General must send his report to the General Chapter six months before the Chapter begins and so in early March this was duly sent out. It was sent to the delegates of the General Chapter but I hope that Provincials will share the contents with all the friars. It was rather long but it included the work of the whole General Council for the past six years as well as some challenges that I think the Order is facing over the next few years. At the beginning of the Chapter itself, I will assume that everyone will have read my report and so I can give a shorter talk.

I then paid a short visit to our newest foundation in Mexico City. This is the second foundation of the PCM Province in Mexico and gives the opportunity for studies in philosophy and theology. We have been blessed with some vocations in Mexico and the house may soon be too small for the community. I then went to New Jersey in the U.S.A. to receive the vows of the community of female hermits (Hermits of Our Lady of Mount Carmel - Chester) who were incorporated into the Order with the consent of the Sacred Congregation for Institutes of the Consecrated Life. Two communities of male hermits in Christoval and Lake Elmo (U.S.A.) are seeking incorporation into the Order also.

In the middle of March, the General Council met for one week, during which we reviewed the work of the various International Commissions and prepared for forthcoming meetings. I visited the Biblicum where a small celebration was held for the publication of a book by Fr. Craig Morrison (PCM), who is one of the lecturers there.

On 25 May I was delighted to receive the letter from the Pope to mark the Carmelite Marian Year. I hope that you have managed to read this letter by now. Fr. Camilo Maccise, the Superior General of the Discalced Carmelites, and I wrote to His Holiness to thank him. We hope to thank him personally during the audience which the Carmelite Family will have with the Pope on 12 September.

In early April I took off for Australia where I visited the communities in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne and presided at the Provincial Chapter in early May. After a gap of some years there is now a simply professed friar in the Province, from Papua New Guinea.

With Fr. Anthony Scerri, I left Australia for England. From 14 to 21 May we held at Aylesford a joint General Council meeting with the Discalced Carmelites. We had intended visiting Hulne where there are some well-preserved ruins of an ancient Carmelite foundation. Hulne was founded the same year as Aylesford (1242). Unfortunately we could not go there as some areas were still cut off because of the foot and mouth disease among animals. However, we managed to visit other places of Carmelite interest. One fruit of this meeting is another joint letter of the two Generals to mark the Marian year. It is entitled, "With Mary the Mother of Jesus" (Acts 1,14) and is dated 16th May, feast of St. Simon Stock. I hope that this letter will be published very soon.

When we returned to Rome, the General Council held two days of our own meetings and then I attended the meeting of Superiors General. The theme of the meeting of the Superiors General was the forthcoming synod on the figure of the bishop. I write these lines before the Episcopal consecration of Fr. Filippo Iannone (Brun). I plan to be present in Naples for this great occasion on 26 May.

    Fr. Anthony Scerri, General Councillor

From 25 February to 1 March 2001, the Prior General and myself paid a fraternal visit to our brothers and sisters of the Missionary Family Donum Dei (FMDD) in Burkina Faso. Fr. General gave talks to the FMDD communities in Ouagadougou and Bobo Dioulasso.

Some aspirants to Carmel together with Fr. Francisco Daza (Baet)

We had community meetings with the brothers in Bobo Dioulasso. The community now includes three pre-novices. There is an excellent spirit in the community and each member is doing excellent work both at home and in the diocese. Bishop Anselme Sanon invited all to lunch one day and expressed his satisfaction with the Carmelites in his diocese. We also visited the priests at the Cathedral where our brothers lend a hand regularly and are made welcome.

There are a number of aspirants waiting to join the Order both in Ouagadougou and in Bobo Dioulasso. The urgent need of the community is that of beginning to build a pre-noviciate and a noviciate. There is a plot of land of about 4 hectares which is about to be acquired by the Province of Baetica. At present the brothers are accommodated in a house generously made available to us by our FMDD sisters.

From 5 – 10 March 2001, Frs. Anton Beemsterboer (Provincial of Lower Germany), Carlo Cicconetti (Provincial of Italy), Jean Marie Dundji (Commissary of Congo) and myself met at the diocesan Centre in the diocese of Mbalmayo. This Centre is run by our FMDD sisters. Fr. Francisco Daza, prior at Burkina Faso, was also invited, but due to difficulties of visa and travel arrangements, was not able to come in time.

Because of the political difficulties in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, we felt it necessary to make foundation in Cameroon as soon as possible:

    1. for the three Cameroonese brothers now doing their noviciate in the Congo,
    2. for three Cameroonese pre-novices who were not able to enter the Congo and who are ready to start their noviciate, and
    3. for three Congolese pre-novices from Kinshasa who are not able to go to the eastern part of the Congo to start their noviciate.
Consequently we accepted a parish offered to us by Bishop Adalbert of Mbalmayo and we bought a piece of land in Yaounde, the capital of Cameroon, near the Catholic University and the theological and philosophical colleges for religious. The Lower German Province has generously taken responsibility for this project, while the Italian Province and the Commissariat of the Congo have no less generously accepted to provide personnel for the parish and for formation. We would welcome friars from other Provinces who feel they could offer a few years to help this mission get started.

Please keep this our latest foundation in Africa in your prayers and generosity.

During the second half of April and the first week of May 2001, the Prior General, Fr. Joseph Chalmers, and myself, visited all the Carmelite communities in Australia previous to the Provincial Chapter which took place from 7 to 11 May. In each house the Prior General addressed the community and each member of the Province had the opportunity to see either of us individually. The visits were very open and fruitful as preparation for the Chapter.

The Chapter itself went smoothly in a fraternal and prayerful atmosphere. Each day began with a lectio divina and each session began with a time of silence helped by either a short talk by the Prior General or texts prepared by the preparatory commission. The overall theme of the Chapter was "Choose life" with sub-themes on Spirituality, Community, Stewardship and Leadership. The mood of the Chapter was optimistic and looking to the future in a positive way. The following were elected: Fr. Wayne Stanhope, Provincial, and Frs. Paul Chandler, Laurie Timms, Jim Des Lauriers and David Hofman, Councillors.

A very important decision was taken at this Chapter, that the Province take responsibility for the mission in Timor Loro Sae (East Timor). This will be done in collaboration with the Indonesian Province. Also the Province will take an interest in vocations in the Oceania area.

    A LETTER FROM THE POPE
    TO THE CARMELITES

In a letter of 25 March 2001, addressed to Fr. Joseph Chalmers, Prior General of the Carmelites, as well as to Fr. Camilo Maccise, Superior General of the Discalced Carmelites, John Paul II expressed the importance of the devotion to the Virgin Mary, through the use of the Scapular, revealing that he himself wore this same sign of veneration and particular faithfulness to the Virgin Mary.

The message praises the decision of the Order "in its two ancient and reformed branches", to dedicate the year 2001 to Mary, to coincide with the 750th anniversary of the giving of the Scapular, defined as the "venerable tradition of the Order itself". The Marian patrimony of Carmel has become, over time, "through the spread of the devotion of the holy Scapular, a treasure for the whole Church. For its simplicity, for its anthropological value and for the relationship with Mary as regards the Church and humanity, this devotion has been profoundly and widely grasped by the people of God, so much so as to find expression in the commemoration of July 16th, which is present in the Liturgical Calendar of the Universal Church".

Especially concerning the Scapular, John Paul II, emphasized that it is worn not only by him but also by many simple faithful as a devotion to Mary, who in this way find themselves associated with the great Carmelite Family. (For the complete text of the letter see: http://www.ocarm.org/eng/gp2eng.htm)

Camilo Maccise, invite all the members of Carmel: friars, cloistered nuns, sisters, tertiaries, members of the Confraternities of the Scapular and devotees of Our Lady of Mount Carmel to take part in the gathering of the Carmelite Family in St. Peter’s Square on 12 September 2001, to manifest joy and gratitude to Mary for the gift of the Scapular and to the Holy Father for his recent Letter on devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel.

The programme will begin on 11 September at 5.00 p.m. with a catechesis and a prayer meeting in linguistic groups. A Marian Vigil will then follow at 8.00 p.m. On Wednesday 12 September, at 8.00 a.m. the Carmelite Confraternities and the faithful will enter St. Peter’s Square for the audience with the Holy Father, John Paul II, the coronation of the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel and the Papal blessing.

    APPOINTED . . . . . .

His Holiness Pope John Paul II appointed Fr. Filippo Iannone, O.Carm., member of the General Commissariat La Vergine Bruna, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdioceses of Naples. The news of the appointment was announced personally by the Archbishop of Naples, Cardinal Michele Giordano, during the morning Mass of Holy Thursday.

Fr. Filippo Iannone, 43, was born in Naples and after completing high school, entered the Carmelite Order and took simple vows in 1977. In 1982 he was ordained to the priesthood. He took his Bachelor's degree in Theology and then went to Rome where he graduated in Utroque Iure at the Pontifical University of the Lateran. He also attended specialization courses run by the Congregations for the Sacraments and for Religious. In 1987 he obtained the diploma of Advocate of the Rota at the Apostolic Tribunal of the Holy Roman Rota. Fr. Iannone has held several positions in the Archdiocese of Naples and in the Carmelite Order, among others, lecturer in Canon Law at the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Southern Italy, Judicial Vicar at the Diocesan Tribunal of Naples, Episcopal Pro-Vicar General, legal representative, Provincial bursar and Councillor of La Vergine Bruna Commissariat and member of the Commission for the revision of the Constitutions of our Order.

The episcopal ordination of Mgr. Filippo Iannone, titular bishop of Nebbi, was presided by Cardinal Giordano in the cathedral church of Naples on Saturday 26 May 2001.

On 3 April 2001 Fr. Albert Brincat O.Carm., member of the Maltese Province, was appointed Vicar General of the Diocese of Tarija, Bolivia, where he has been working for the last two years. Before the present experience in Bolivia, Fr. Albert worked for twenty-one years in Columbia.

Fr. Brincat was born on 18 January 1942. In 1957 he joined the Carmelite Order and the following year he made his simple Profession. After completing his philosophical studies in Malta he was sent at St. Albert's International College in Rome to continue his theological studies. On 3 April 1965 Fr. Albert was ordained priest. He pursued his studies obtaining a licentiate in theology from the Pontifical University of the Lateran. From 1967 to 1969 he continued his studies at the Pontifical Biblical Institute.

    FROM
    THE GENERAL POSTULATOR

    Fr. Felip Amenós, O.Carm.

The cause of Blessed Titus Brandsma is taking its normal course. The "brief" and "report" of the presumed miracle were handed over to the Congregation for revision fourteen months ago. At present the documentation is being reprinted for it to be consigned to the doctors and theologians. We cannot say how long this will take. In order not to create false hopes it is best to wait for the judgement of the experts. Providence will present us with this joy at the appropriate moment.

Françoise d’Amboise, Duchess of Brittany (France), founded the first monastery of women in Bondon. Because of her influence on the legislation of the monastery founded by her and on other French monasteries, she is considered as the foundress of women Carmelites in France. Her renown for sanctity is very much alive in Brittany. People call her "the holy duchess". The French General Delegation is studying the possibility of spreading knowledge of the French Blessed throughout the Order with the aim of a possible canonisation. At present there are some leaflets published by some monasteries. We ask for the collaboration of all for this project, above all we ask prayers for the intercession of Blessed Françoise d’Amboise. Any graces received through her intercession should be communicated to this postulation in order to determine whether to present such graces to the Congregation with a view to the canonisation of this Blessed. The diocesan process of the Servant of God has completed the editing of the "brief", the biography and the "informatio". Most of the work was done by Sr. Josefina Diaz and the vice-postulator, Sr. Aurea Ferreira (HVMMC). Sr. Josefina wrote the biography of the Servant of God and Sr. Aurea took charge of the "brief" which puts in order all of the documentation of the process and the depositions of the witnesses. Two large volumes will form the "positio" or report, which the theologians and the commission formed by the bishops and cardinals will have to study before the Pope can decree the heroic nature of her virtues. We hope that the editor of the cause will present the "positio" as soon as possible so that it may be given to the printers. We are preparing to open the Cause of the Venerable John of St. Samson. Recently I held a meeting with the bishop of Nantes to let him know of our desire to open the diocesan process in Nantes and to approach the scholars of the city on the writings of the Venerable John of St. Samson. These scholars could demonstrate to the tribunal the sanctity of the Venerable. I also visited the archbishop of Rennes to ask for permission to open the process in Nantes, since according to the rules of the Holy See, the opening of a cause depends on the ordinary of the place where the Venerable died, namely Rennes. Both bishops agreed and so we shall proceed with the opening of the cause of beatification of this famous figure within the Order.

    INTERNATIONAL MEETING
    OF CARMELITES LIBRARIANS

Carmelite librarians from many parts of the world gathered together recently in Whitefriars Hall, Washington, DC, U.S.A., to discuss common projects and the provision of Carmelite resources in the different Provinces of the Order. The meeting was called by the General Delegate for Culture, Fr. Richard Copsey (Brit), and took place from 4 to 6 April 2001. There were representatives from Italy, USA, England, Holland, Australia, India and Zimbabwe, and among the fourteen participants, there were two lay librarians who care for our Carmelite Collections in Aylesford (England) and Washington.

During the three days, apart from the sharing of information on the various Carmelite Collections and Institutes, there were short presentations by invited experts on computer systems for the provision of library catalogues, the care and preservation of our collections and some guidelines on networking our existing computer systems. The morning of the second day was spent visiting the National Gallery in Washington where there was presentations on their extensive slide collection and rare books collection.

Among the projects discussed during the three days were:

    1. The computerisation of the catalogues of our Carmelite Collections throughout the world. The catalogue of the Carmelite Collection in Washington has now been keyed-in and will be in operation shortly. The next stage will be to enter the catalogue of our major Carmelite Collection in Rome into a compatible system and a small group has been established to study the appropriate system to be adopted.
    2. Fr. Patrick McMahon (PCM) and Ms. Patricia O’Callaghan, who care for the Washington Collection, have started a project to digitally photograph a number of their older Carmelite books and record them on CD-Rom. Many of our older books are now very rare and, even when second-hand copies become available, they command prohibitively high prices. An early 17th century edition of the life of St. Teresa of Avila is now available on CD-Rom and the digital photographing of the four volumes of the Speculum Carmelitanum (1680) was completed just before the meeting and is contained on 2 CD-Rom. The intention is that by transferring such works onto CD-Rom they can be made available to our newer Carmelite libraries and also sold commercially to the major academic libraries throughout the world. Even our longer established Carmelite libraries will benefit as they will be able to restrict access to the older and rarer volumes in their collections as visiting researchers will be able consult the works using a CD-Rom copy.
    3. A second similar project was presented whereby many early Carmelite texts are being transferred to CD-Rom. Fr. Richard Copsey distributed a disk containing a collection of over 100 original texts, together with about 50 English translations which had been prepared in a provisional version for the meeting. Fr. Antonio Ruiz (Baet) reported on similar work that he was doing in Rome, transferring early official documents such as the Acts of the General Chapters, Constitutions and the Bullarium onto disk.
    4. A group of Carmelites in Washington is currently looking at the best way to transfer the annual Carmelite bibliography into a computer database for distribution on CD-Rom. The annual bibliography has been published for over 50 years and having the accumulated results available in a easily searchable form would be a great advantage. It is hoped that the work of transferring the contents of past volumes into the computer will go ahead soon.
Other topics discussed included proposals for revitalising our Institutes, how to ensure that spare copies of Carmelite books were available for our developing Provinces and the setting up of some linking organisation to enable our Carmelite libraries to act in unison when appropriate.

A follow-up meeting is planned for the 2nd week of Easter 2003.

    MEETING OF CARMELITE SUPERIORS
    OF THE IBERIAN REGION

On 3 April 2001, a meeting was held at the General Curia of the Sisters of the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel (HVMMC) in Madrid (Spain) of the Co-ordinating Mixed Group and the Conference of Provincials of the Iberian Region. Those who took part were: two Superiors General, Sr. Encarnación Flórez González (HCSCJ), President of the Co-ordinating Mixed Group, and Sr. Maria del Carmen Aparicio Personal (HVMMC), and the Provincials, Fr. Luis Gallardo Ganuza (Arag), President of the Conference of Provincials, Fr. Rafael Leiva Sánchez (Baet), Secretary of the Iberian Region, Fr. Manuel Bonilla Gutiérrez (Cat), Fr. Juan de Dios Sanz (Cast) and Fr. Henrique Martins (Lus). Three nuns from the three federations were absent, namely, Sr. Mª de Cristo Rey Mora Pérez (Mater et Decor Carmeli), Sr. Elena Maria Samper Samper (Mater Unitatis) and Sr. Josepa Francesca Castells i Camins (Verge Flos del Carmel).

    Order of the day:
    1. Reports of the various commissions

    2. Other points Presentation of the commemorative poster prepared by both Carmelite Orders, O.Carm – OCD, for the 750th anniversary of the Scapular; Guide of the Iberian Carmel, O.Carm – OCD, which will be printed soon; VIIIth Meeting of the Carmelite Family in Seville, from 27 to 30 June 2001.
    THREE BEATIFICATIONS
    IN MALTA

On 9 May 2001, John Paul II, before a crowd of 150 thousand (almost half the population of Malta), raised to the honours of the altar three witnesses to the faith. These are the Carmelite tertiary, George Preca, great apostle of the laity, the Benedictine religious, Maria Adeodata Pisani, model of prayer and contemplation, and the cleric Ignazio Falzon, catechist and pioneer of ecumenical dialogue. At first, there was to be only one beatification, but on 24 April the Pope signed the decrees of the heroic virtues of 52 Servants of God and Blessed, among whom were the two Maltese, Sr. Adeodata and the cleric Ignazio Falzon. Representing the Curia at the beatification were Fr. Tarsicio Gotay Figaredo, Delegate of the Prior General, Alexander Vella, General Councillor, Felip Amenós, Postulator General, and Anthony Cilia, Director of CITOC.

Bl. Ignazio Falzon, Bl. George Preca, Bl. M. Adeodata Pisani

"There is no member of the Church who does not owe something to Carmel" says the Trappist monk, Thomas Merton. This is true not only of Blessed George Preca (of whom we wrote in previous editions of CITOC), but in some way also Blessed Adeodata and Blessed Ignazio.

Blessed Maria Adeodata Pisani was born in Naples (Italy) on 29 December 1806. Her father was the Maltese Baron Pisani. She was brought up and educated by her paternal grandmother and, when she was 10, the time her grandmother died, she was placed in a college where she received a good Christian education. At the age of 19 she went to Malta, where, after three years, on 16 July, Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, she entered the monastery of the Benedictine nuns in Mdina. She dedicated her religious life to Mary. One year after her noviciate, on 8 March 1830, she took her solemn vows. As a permanent member of the community, she continued to lead a life of humility and sacrifice. Even though she never sought positions of authority, during the next 25 years she held the offices of sacristan, nurse, mistress of novices and abbess. She suffered bad health and on 25 February 1855 she died.

Blessed Ignazio Falzon was born in Valletta on 1 July 1813. At the age of 15 he took the clerical habit and at 20 he became Doctor of civil and canon law. He felt himself unworthy and never exercised his legal profession nor would he accept priestly ordination. His spiritual food and the support for his apostolate were adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and meditation. Blessed Ignazio Falzon is well known for the special area in which he carried out his apostolate and gave witness, namely, among the large British garrison stationed in Valletta (during the years of the Crimean War, 1853-1856, there were about 20.000 British soldiers in Malta). He started organising prayer meetings and lessons in catechism for the Catholics. He also became friend with their non-Catholic and even non-Christian fellow soldiers and drew many of these to the Catholic faith. The documents speak of more than 600 conversions. It is for this reason that he is considered the pioneer and champion of ecumenical dialogue. He died at the age of 52, on his birthday, 1 July 1865.

Because of the late insertion in the programme of beatification, the devotion of these two new Blessed to Our Lady of Mount Carmel has not yet been well defined. However, some documents show that Blessed Ignazio Falzon associated many of the converted with Carmel through the Scapular. We still do not know where and when Blessed Ignazio Falzon was enrolled in the Scapular, but the fact that he wore the Scapular and urged others to do the same and that he greatly loved the Mother of Carmel, is beyond doubt. According to Mgr. Philip Calleja, postulator of the cause, one of the relics of the Blessed through which many faithful obtain inexplicable wonders is precisely the Carmelite Scapular that Blessed Ignazio Falzon held in his hands after his death. It seems that this relic is now among Maltese migrants in the United States and is passed from family to family with great faith and veneration.

    10th ANNIVERSARY OF
    THE CARMELITE HERMITAGE OF CAPACCIO

On 23 March 2001, the Neapolitan Province, which operates the Carmelite Hermitage in the town of Capaccio (Salerno), recalled the 10th anniversary of the hermitage’s foundation. The hermitage is built near the monastery on the side of Mount Calpazio, adjacent to the ancient Cathedral of the 10th century and at present known as the Diocesan Marian Sanctuary with the title of Our Lady of Granato.

The anniversary was celebrated with a day of prayer together with many religious, priests and lay people. Those who took part in the celebrations were: Fr. Nicola M. Barbarello, Provincial, about ten other Carmelites and some parish priests from the surrounding area. After the Eucharistic celebration a meal was served in the refectory. In the afternoon, a large group of faithful and devotees of Our Lady of Granato joined the Carmelite hermit, Fr. Domenico Fiore (Neap) in fervent prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord for all the graces and blessings received throughout this period.

The Carmelite hermitage of Capaccio was started after a meeting between the bishop of Vallo della Lucania (SA), Mgr. Giuseppe Rocco Favale, and the then Provincial, Fr. Lucio M. Renna, now bishop of Avezzano (AQ). At this meeting the two superiors agreed to entrust the direction of the Marian Sanctuary and the hermitage to Fr. Domenico. Since then, over the past ten years, the hermit has welcomed for day retreats many parish groups from various parts, and for a few days, priests and seminarians for a "desert" experience, or young people discerning their vocation. Fr. Domenico wishes to make contact with other Carmelites who have the same style of life. His website and electronic address are: http://www.ocarm.org/madonnadelgranato , madonnadelgranato@libero.it.

    CARMELITE CLOISTERED NUNS

During the solemn Mass presided by Mgr. Julito B. Cortes

On 6 March 2001, Mgr. Julito B. Cortes, Diocesan Administrator of Dumaguete, sent a letter (#157/22/01) to all priests and religious of the diocese concern-ing the 750th anniversary of the Carmelite Scapular. In his letter, Mgr. Cortes recalled the event and expressed the wish of the diocese to unite itself joyfully to the International Carmelite Family in celebrating the Marian Year. Before presenting a brief catechesis on the Scapular, the Diocesan Administrator announced the decision to dedicate the chapel of the Carmelite monastery of "Nuestra Señora de los Maravillas y san José" as a place of pilgrimage for this year and asked that the content of the letter be passed on in homilies and conferences so that the faithful of the diocese may know and obtain the benefits which accrue from devotion to the Scapular of Carmel. On 25 March 2001, the day that John Paul II published his letter on the Scapular, Mgr. Cortes inaugurated the Marian Year with a solemn Mass in the chapel of the Carmelite nuns.

On 16 March 2001, the Carmelite nuns of "S. Croce di Lucca" celebrated their triennial chapter. The Commissary General of "La Vergine Bruna", Fr. Luigi Nasta, presided at the elections which resulted in the following:
    Prioress: Sr. Maria Coppola
    Councillor: Sr. M. Maddalena Pepe
    Councillor: Sr. M. Carmela Massaro

    CARMELITE MISSIONARY SISTERS OF
ST. THERESE OF THE CHILD JESUS

In the afternoon of 21 April 2001, the Carmelite Missionary Sisters of St. Therese of the Child Jesus (SCMTBG), together with the parish community of Fregene (Rome), celebrated the blessing of the restored premises of the Casa Famiglia "Maria Andriani Aprosio". The ceremony opened with a Mass in the parish church presided by the parish priest of Fregene and animated by the girls of the Casa Famiglia. The participants then went to the house for the blessing and inauguration of the restructured and renewed premises. The new rooms have two beds and bathroom in order to give more dignified form of accommodation to the girls entrusted to the sisters. The ceremony concluded with a fraternal agape. Many important persons and friends came to the ceremony, including the Mayor, the social workers of the district of Fiumicino and those responsible for "first assistance" of the district of Rome. At present, in the house, there are girls from Italy, Rumania, Albania, China and Moldavia. On Wednesday, 25 April 2001, in the Basilica of the Carmine Maggiore, Naples, the Carmelite sisters (SCMTBG) together with the Carmelite friars of the General Commissariat of "La Vergine Bruna" and the parish community, thanked the Lord for the 50 years of presence of the sisters and their collaboration with the friars. During the Eucharist, presided by Fr. Luigi Nasta, Commissary General, and concelebrated by other friars, those present were reminded of the beginnings in 1951 and the motivation which led Mother Crocifissa and Fr. Lorenzo to accept the invitation of Fr. Pier Tommaso Matarrelli (Brun) for the sisters to collaborate by taking care of the kitchen of the friars, setting up a sewing laboratory and a kindergarten, and assisting with catechesis and youth ministry in the parish. In his homily, Fr. Luigi emphasised the missionary dimension of Mother Crocifissa, the foundress of the sisters, now made more concrete by the presence in the Commissariat of the young Tanzanians who have started their Carmelite and priestly formation in order later to return to their homeland. All this was made possible through the collaboration of the sisters who have been in Tanzania since 1984.

    CARMELITE SISTERS OF
    MOTHER CANDELARIA

The first of various celebrations to commemorate the first centenary of the foundation of the Congregation of the Hermanas Carmelitas de Madre Candelaria in 1903, was a Holy Mass celebrated on 25 March 2001. The inspiration of the Congregation came from Mother Candelaria of St. Joseph and Mgr. Sixto Sosa. They imprinted on their followers the Carmelite charism, that is, to live in the presence of God in an attitude of prayer, to give witness to fraternal charity, to faith and hope and to be open to the service of the most needy. At present the Congregation has about eighty religious in thirteen houses in Venezuela and one house in Puerto Rico.

The celebrations, which will be spread over three years, will involve both the sisters and people outside the Congregation. The plan for the sisters is to have meetings, study days and courses on the charism of the founders together with a renewed commitment to the spiritual, pastoral and vocational life. For the faithful among whom the sisters of Mother Candelaria work, the plan is for these to propagate publications, talks and presentations on the life and virtues of the founders.

    INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS OF
    THE CARMELITE THIRD ORDER

From 1 to 5 May 2001, an International Congress of the Carmelite Third Order was held at Il Carmelo centre in Sassone (Rome). About 100 tertiaries gathered to get to know each other to exchange ideas on their way of life and apostolic activities. Those present represented tens of thousands of tertiary brothers and sisters and an even greater number of lay people associated in various ways with the Carmelite Family. A few chaplains, friars and sisters were also present.

Dr. Pinharanda Gomes (Portugal) began the reflection with a talk on "Laity and Secularity". He reviewed what has been affirmed recently by the documents of the magisterium and by ecclesial experience. Mr. Tom Zeitvogel (United States) followed with a presentation of the main challenges to be met by the Carmelite Third Order in the years ahead. The assembly then listened to a presentation by Fr. Felip Amenós, Postulator General, on the example of many Carmelites, including lay Carmelites, who stand out for the sanctity of their lives. Finally, Fr. Tarsicio M. Gotay, Delegate General for the Laity, explained the process undergone for the revision of the Rule of the Carmelite Third Order

Lay Carmelites came from a wide geographic area. The five continents were represented and it was interesting to see that the areas which, from the ecclesial point of view, are developing, are maturing through very rich experiences and have great potentiality. The meeting gave the participants an increased sense of belonging to the great Family of Carmel and of confidence that they participate actively in shaping its spiritual wealth.

    MEETINGS OF
    LAY CARMELITES

On 28 April 2001, the Fourteenth Meeting of the Carmelite Family took place in Paradas (Seville). These meetings on Carmelite spirituality are held every year in a different place. This year Paradas was chosen. In this town there is a community of the Sisters of the Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel (HVMMC) who look after a hospice and where there is also a group of lay Carmelites. The people of Paradas have long had great devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The parish priest of San Eutropio, Rev. José Maria Guzmán Sánchez de Alva, many religious of the Province, diocesan priests, Carmelite sisters (HVMMC) and about 400 lay Carmelites from Andalusia, La Mancha and Madrid, took part in the celebrations. For this event, Fr. Ismael Martínez Carretero prepared a short historical account of Paradas and of the Carmelite presence there. In this Marian Year on the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the Scapular, Fr. Jaime Andrade Bermudo (Baet) spoke to the participants of "The Marian doctrine in Carmel". The Eucharist was presided by Fr. Rafael Leiva Sánchez, Provincial, and this was followed by a fraternal feast. The 14th Congress of Lay Carmel will be celebrated from 8 to 10 June 2001 in El Carmen in Onda (Castellón). The programme of the congress will include times of prayer and reflection, fraternity in groups and in general assemblies. The speakers will be Fr. Luis Gallardo on "Mother and Beauty of Carmel" and Fr. Rafael Ma. López-Melus on "Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the Lives of the Saints". For further information please contact: PP. Carmelitas, "El Carmen", Apartado 53, 12200 Onda (Castellón), Spain. Tel: 964-601394. A two day National Congress on the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel will take place on 13 - 14 July 2001 at the Carmelite Spiritual Center in Darien. On the evening of 13 July, a eucharistic celebration, presided by bishop Joseph Imesch of the Diocese of Juliet, will inaugurate the Congress. The following day will be entirely devoted to talks aimed at deepening understanding of the role of the Brown Scapular and increasing relationship of Mary with the Carmelites and the power of the Brown Scapular as symbol of that relationship. Fr. Joseph Chalmers, Prior General, will present "The Future of Our Past: The Scapular for the 3rd Millennium", Fr. Patrick McMahon (PCM) and Fr. Sam Anthony Morello, OCD, will speak on "The History and Heritage of the Scapular", Fr. David Blanchard (PCM) will offer "Sacramentals: Keeping the Faith". More information on the Congress is available from the Carmelite Spiritual Center in Darien, IL, USA. Tel: 630-9694141.

This book contains a set of explorations of the logic of this divine love, a love which transforms us into true lovers. In taking these explorations the authors have followed the four great commentaries of John of the Cross and one of his poems.

    NEWS IN BRIEF

Under the title "Mater et Decor Carmeli", the Italian Province organised from 12 to 14 March 2001, at the Sanctuary of S. Felice del Benaco, a pastoral convention with the idea of making contact with and uniting all the groups of Marian devotion which the Carmelites set up in places where, often for centuries, they have not been present. The programme began with a talk by Fr. Giovanni Grosso, illustrating the origin, development and forms of Marian devotion in Carmel. Fr. Rodolfo Girardello, OCD, drew attention to the present time in mariology, in the mystery of Christ and the Church. Fr. Carlo Cicconetti dealt with the theme "Carmelite Marian values today". Fr. Lucio M. Zappatore presented aids and useful liturgical models for prayer and Eucharistic celebrations. Fr. Bruno Secondin helped to formulate some conclusions and Fr. Roberto Toni gave some final reflections. The Carmelite Press Centre (Centro Stampa Carmelitano, Italy) has put out commemorative publications, a poster and a medal, and, at the request of religious of the Province working in parishes and sanctuaries, has recently produced two cloths to be hung at church doors to remind people of the Carmelite Marian Year. One cloth (100 x 300 cm) has a picture of Our Lady giving the Scapular (a painting by Alessandro Franchi) with the inscription "750° anniversario dello Scapolare del Carmine" and the invitation "Accogli il dono di Maria". The second cloth has the inscription "2001 anno mariano carmelitano" with the logo of the Marian Year and the invitation "Rivestiti dell’abito di Maria". The Provinces of Ireland and Great Britain are preparing a Carmelite Forum which will take place at Gort Muire, Dublin, on 2 - 4 November 2001. The theme of the conference will be "How Do I Pray Today?" and "How Does Carmel Help Me to Pray Today?" The speakers will be an Irish Discalced Carmelite Nun (yet to be decided) and Miss Rosemary Kinman of the Carmelite Secular Institute "The Leaven". Attending the Forum will be two Third Order Carmelites, one of whom recently participated at the International Lay Carmelite meeting in Sassone (Rome). It is hoped that the Forum will prepare the way for a spiritual accompaniment programme in a Carmelite context.
